What Do You See in the Mirror?

Three way mirrors.

Three little words that invoke a multitude of emotion from the youngest of girls to the oldest of women.

On the one hand, we love this invention.  It provides a real view of what our potential purchase looks like all the way around.  On the other hand, we hate this invention for the very same reason.  Regardless of a person’s body type, it has the capability of triggering major mental trauma.

Last weekend I braved the crowds to take my oldest shopping for new jeans.  With school set to start on Monday, the stores were swarming with students searching for the perfect back to school buys.

While in the dressing room, I studied the girls coming out to analyze themselves.

First was a little girl with a smile so big her face had to hurt.  Beaming with joy, she spun around and excitedly professed, “They fit great.”

She saw beauty.

Next, however, was a tween girl clearly unsure the trendy skinny jean worked for her.  Timidly approaching the mirror, she took a quick glance and promptly dropped herself into her mother’s embrace.

She saw bulging thighs.

And my heart broke.  I can relate to the longing for something to look just as cute on me as it does on the hanger and mentally beating myself up afterwards.

But there is another set of eyes looking at us in that mirror.

So snuggle in with your daughter and watch this:

Because it’s a reminder ALL need to hear it.
