Bringing Up Girls :: Dr. James Dobson
I trust you’ve all heard of Dr. James Dobson? Author of more than 30 books, including his most recent bestseller, Bringing Up Boys.
Well … fortunately for those of us with daughters, it seems everyone and their sister has been hounding Dr. Dobson to write Bringing Up Girls.
So … fresh off the press and without further adieu, the MODsquad team couldn’t be more excited to introduce this book for our very first book club discussion!
Today’s discussion will cover Chapters 1 & 2 as an introduction to Bringing Up Girls and a little about what you can expect from the book.
So … you say you’ve got daughters? Then you’re going to cherish Dr. Dobson’s wisdom and advice {based on a firm foundation of biblical principles} on the challenges our girls face today.
Dr. Dobson understands that “children are a gift from God, and we are stewards of their welfare. Training up our daughters in this sense implies helping them to navigate the cultural minefields that lie in their paths – teaching them eternal values, talents, and perspectives.”
Bringing Up Girls will “deal with girls of all ages, from babyhood to adulthood, and will consider the land mines that surely lie ahead. We’ll talk about teaching girls to be ladies. We’ll discuss the search for self-worth, sexual awakening, single parenting, emotional development, and the how-to’s of raising girls. And of course, we’ll deal with puberty, adolescence, and the obsession with beauty.”
Our girls today are faced with pressures and experiences we, and generations before us, have never before encountered.
Today’s girls are under “the influence of the entertainment industry, Madison Avenue, the Internet, hip-hop musicians,” which is “shaping and warping youngsters and infusing them with harmful ideas that will rob them of the innocence of childhood.
As a result, some of our girls will lose their prospects of having a productive and happy life. The stability of their future families is hanging in the balance. This is what lies in the paths of children whose parents are over worked, distracted, exhausted and uninvolved. Without their care and concern, the culture will take them to hell. I have witnessed it a thousand times. Even with proper parental supervision, many of our kids are on the bubble.
I am most concerned about the children among us who are chronically lonely. Their parents are gone much of the time, leaving them to fend for themselves … Not only do lonely children tend to get into trouble, they also become sitting ducks for abusers who understand their emptiness and use it for their own purposes.”
Our daughters are at great risk in today’s society, and it’s up to us to fight back. ”Our children desperately need us to guide their steps and set reasonable boundaries to protect them.”
Children are a gift from God. A miraculous gift! And we’ve been charged with the most important job of all … to “train a child in the way he should go … ” {Proverbs 22:6}
Dr. Dobson has some greatly inspiring truths in this book … it’s like he knows my heart, my worries, my needs … in my efforts to intentionally parent my girls.
I can’t wait to dive in further and share this discussion with you! The next book club post will be on July 22, and we’ll discuss Chapters 3 through 6.
For any of you who’ve read this incredible parenting guide … what are your favorite take-aways? What hit you deepest? What can’t you get off your mind?
I’m so looking forward to “bringing up our girls” together!

no problem if you don’t have the book yet … the first couple of chapters are pretty much an introduction. you should definitely get yourself a copy and join in next time!!
I am very excited about this book and love the book club idea, so it will keep me accountable to keep reading!
I must say even the quotes above and what I have read in the first several chapters scares me to death. And what is even more scary is that huge amounts of moms have no idea the minefields that await their girls.
Thank you so much for this site and the power it provides in learning and teaching together.

cherie, you’re so right that there are many moms out there that have no idea what our children are facing, or are about to face. i thank God for putting us mom’s together so we can unite and help each other and ultimately raise our girls for Him! i look forward to further discussions!!
I think this book will become a resource for me that I return to over and over again. I have been struck by the urgency of the message. Our girls lives and the lives of girls they will encounter depend on it!
Looking forward to a lively discussion on this great book! Thanks Tracie for leading the way!

just wondering (because my girls are littler) what age of your kids do you think is a good time to read this? i know anytime is good (like learning more now is a good idea) but would it be more appropriate when your kids are elementary age and about to hit the middle school madness??

Heather I think the younger you start, the better off you will be. It is so important to begin planting seeds as early as possible.

i agree with cherie … and i think this book provides a great foundation in “training our girls up.” better to equip yourself with a foundation and tools before the madness hits!

As a mother of 3 little girls, I am LOVING this site. My girls are 6, 3 and 6 months and I am so desperate to raise them well and teach them how to be godly young women.
Thank you for all who prayed this site into existence. I would love to be a part of it.
Blessings!
Welcome Stacy! We are so glad you are here! God’s hand has been in it from the beginning and we are excited to see the journey He takes us all on as we raise our girls for His glory! Can’t wait to get to know you in the days ahead!
Stacy – our girls are very close in age! Mine are 5, 3, and 7 months (and I have an 8yo son as well). I am so thankful for this site as well – I never imagined having girls, thought I would only have boys, and I feel so overwhelmed by the task! Looking forward to learning along with you.
